And that is understandable: the thought of ending up in the water far from shore is not pleasant for anyone. But the reality is this: if you know what to do, getting back onto a sit-on-top kayak from the water is not as hard as it looks. It is a technique you can learn in one practice session in calm water.

In this article we show step by step how self-rescue is done: getting back into the kayak from the water on your own. We cover what gear helps, how to practice and how to reduce the risk of capsizing. At VAKA Sport we sell sit-on-top kayaks (NuCanoe, Galaxy Kayaks, Bonafide), so this guide focuses on exactly this type of kayak.

Why sit-on-top kayaks are safer than you think

Sit-on-top kayaks have one key safety advantage over traditional kayaks with an enclosed cockpit: you sit ON the kayak, not inside it. If the kayak capsizes, you simply end up in the water next to it. You will not be trapped in an upturned boat, and you will not need to perform an Eskimo roll, which takes special training.

In addition, sit-on-top kayaks are self-bailing. Their deck has special holes, called scupper holes, through which water drains out naturally. This means that after a capsize, once you are back on, you do not need to pump the water out: it drains by itself within a few minutes once the kayak is the right way up again.

But that does not mean a capsize is harmless. Cold water, current, wind, fatigue and panic all pose a real risk even for experienced kayakers. That is why self-rescue is not a "might come in handy someday" skill but an essential competence for everyone who gets into a kayak.

Gear that can save your life

Before we talk about the self-rescue technique, let us look at the gear that makes the whole process safer and easier. Some of these items are not optional but an absolute necessity.

Life vest (PFD): not optional, but essential

A life vest must be on you ALWAYS when you are on the water. Not lying in the kayak under the seat. Not hanging on the backrest "because it is hot". On your body, zipped up and tightened.

For fishing and active kayaking we recommend dedicated fishing vests with a higher back: they are designed so they do not get in the way when sitting in a kayak seat with a high backrest. NRS Chinook PFD is one of the best choices: a high back, plenty of tool pockets and a comfortable design that does not get in the way of paddling or fishing. We also recommend looking at the Baltic Lifejackets models, which are popular in the Baltic states for their quality and affordable price.

You will find a wide choice of vests and other safety gear in our safety category.

Paddle leash

After capsizing, your first instinct is to grab the kayak. At that moment the paddle can simply float away downstream or with the wind. Getting back to shore without a paddle becomes a serious and potentially dangerous problem, especially if you are far from shore. A paddle leash is a simple cord that ties the paddle to the kayak and costs just a few euros. You will find leashes and spare kayak paddles in the accessories category. An essential detail you should never forget.

A knife on your vest

A knife on your life vest is not a dramatic accessory from adventure movies. It is a safety item you may genuinely need if you get tangled in rope, a fishing net, weeds or other aquatic vegetation. Such situations, though rare, can be dangerous if you have nothing to cut yourself free quickly. NRS Titanium Pilot peilis is compact, made of rust-proof titanium and easy to reach when attached to your vest. The blade has a blunt tip, so you cannot accidentally cut yourself or puncture your life vest.

The right clothing for the water

Often forgotten, but clothing matters a lot for safety on the water. Cold water quickly draws heat from the body, so even in summer it is worth thinking about what you wear. WALLYS and NRS make dedicated water sports clothing, from neoprene shorts to dry suits. If you fish in early spring or late autumn, when the water temperature is low, the right clothing can be vital. In our apparel category you will find options for different conditions.

A dry bag for your belongings

Your phone, keys, documents and car keys must all be in a dry bag or case. Not because you will definitely capsize. But because IF you capsize, you do not want to be looking for your phone at the bottom of the lake. Phone case protects your phone and lets you use it even on the water. For storing bigger items, you will find dry bags in our dry bags category.

Self-rescue technique: step by step

Here is exactly what to do when your sit-on-top kayak capsizes. This sequence is worth not only reading but also practicing in safe conditions.

Step 1: do not panic

It sounds trite, but it is the most important moment. Panic is your biggest enemy in the water. You have a life vest (because you are wearing it, right?), so you will not sink. The kayak has not gone anywhere: sit-on-top kayaks float even upside down, as they have air chambers in the hull. Take a deep breath, calm down and start acting methodically, step by step.

Step 2: hold on to the kayak and gather your gear

First, make sure you are holding the kayak. If you have a paddle leash (and you should), the paddle will be with the kayak. If not, first grab the paddle before it floats away, and put it on the upturned kayak or hold it in one hand. Check that your rods, boxes and other items have not disappeared: some of them, if they were tied down, will still be on the kayak.

Step 3: flip the kayak back over

Swim to one side of the kayak. Reach across the bottom of the kayak to the far gunwale (the opposite side) and pull it toward you. The kayak will flip back onto its bottom. If the kayak is heavy or had a lot of gear tied on, you may need to dip under the water a little and push the near gunwale up from below while pulling the far one down. Sit-on-top kayaks flip over quite easily: they are designed for it.

Step 4: climb onto the kayak

This is the most important technique, and it is worth practicing in advance. There are two ways:

From the stern (recommended): Swim to the stern of the kayak. Put both arms over the deck and start pulling yourself onto the kayak, as if climbing onto a low raft. Once your chest is on the deck, use your arms to push yourself forward toward the seat. Then swing your legs round and sit down. This method is the most stable, because when pulling yourself on from the stern you do not weigh the kayak down to one side, and the risk of capsizing is minimal.

From the side: If you cannot reach the stern (for example, a motor, anchor or other gear is in the way), climb over the side. Grab the far gunwale (across the deck), kick hard with your legs and haul yourself onto the deck. Once you are lying on your stomach on the kayak, swing your legs round and sit down. This method takes more strength and carries a higher risk of capsizing again, but sometimes it is the only option.

Step 5: calm down and get organized

Once you are back on the kayak, do not rush off anywhere. Sit low and let the water drain through the scupper holes, which takes a few minutes. Check that you have your paddle, that all your gear is in place and nothing is missing. Catch your breath and get your strength back. Only then start paddling toward shore, or continue your trip if you feel well enough.

How to practice self-rescue

Self-rescue needs practicing not when you capsize in serious conditions, but in advance, in a controlled environment. Here is how to do it properly.

Choose a warm day and a calm, shallow body of water where you can stand (ideally no deeper than 1.5 meters). Wear your life vest and the clothing you usually paddle in. Ideally, have a friend nearby in another kayak who watches and can help if needed.

Deliberately capsize the kayak and practice the whole self-rescue sequence from start to finish. Do it 3 to 5 times, until the technique becomes natural and you no longer have to think about each step separately. Note how much strength and time it takes you personally: everyone's fitness is different, and it is important to know your own limits.

During practice you will notice a few important things. First, getting back onto the kayak without a life vest is much harder, which is one more reason to always wear it. Second, items tied to the kayak stay in place, while loose ones float away in seconds. Third, after 2 or 3 attempts you will feel much braver and more confident on the water.

We recommend practicing at least once every season, even if you are an experienced kayaker. The technique is quickly forgotten over the winter break, and refreshing it in controlled conditions is much better than trying to remember it in an emergency.

Prevention: how to reduce the risk of capsizing

The best self-rescue situation is the one you never need. Here are the main things that will help you stay on the kayak.

Know your kayak's stability. Wide sit-on-top fishing kayaks, such as the Galaxy Kayaks Alboran series, NuCanoe or Bonafide models, are extremely stable and capsize only in extreme cases. Narrower, sportier kayaks can be more sensitive to weight shifting to the side. When choosing a kayak, consider your experience and the conditions you will paddle in. In our fishing kayak review you will find a detailed stability comparison.

Do not stand up in the kayak. If you need to change position, reach for an item or switch rods, do it sitting down or very carefully, keeping your center of gravity low. Most capsizes happen when trying to stand up, leaning suddenly over the side or reaching for an item farther away.

Check the weather before you go. Strong wind and waves pose the greatest capsize risk. If the forecast shows wind above 15 km/h, think seriously about whether it is worth going out, especially if you plan to head away from shore. Sudden gusts are more dangerous than steady wind, so check not only the average wind speed but also the gust forecast.

Distribute the weight correctly. Keep heavy items low and as close to the center of the kayak as possible. YakAttack BlackPak Pro box helps not only to organize your gear but also to secure it so it does not shift or raise the kayak's center of gravity. Loose, untied cargo on the kayak deck is a common cause of capsizing.

You will find more about kayak fishing gear and how to secure it in our beginner's gear guide and rigging guide.

FAQ: capsizing and self-rescue in a kayak

Can a sit-on-top kayak capsize?

Yes, but it happens much less often than many beginners think. Modern sit-on-top fishing kayaks, such as NuCanoe, Galaxy Kayaks or Bonafide models, are designed with a wide hull and a low center of gravity, which gives excellent primary and secondary stability. The most common causes of capsizing are sudden movements (trying to stand up, leaning sharply over the side), strong wind with waves, or incorrect weight distribution. In calm water, experienced kayakers capsize extremely rarely.

What should I do if my kayak capsizes?

The most important thing is not to panic. If you are wearing a life vest (and you should be), you will not sink. Hold on to the kayak and paddle, flip the kayak back the right way up and climb onto it from the stern or the side. The whole process takes 1 to 3 minutes if you have practiced the technique beforehand. You will find detailed step-by-step instructions in the self-rescue section of this article above.

How do I get back into a kayak from the water?

The most effective and safest way is to climb on from the stern. Swim to the stern of the kayak, put both arms over the deck and pull yourself onto the kayak as if onto a low raft. Once your chest is on the deck, push yourself with your arms toward the seat, then swing your legs round and sit down. This method is the most stable, because you do not load one side or upset the kayak's balance. If the stern is blocked by mounted gear, you can climb over the side, but that takes more strength and carries a higher risk of capsizing again.

Do I need to be able to swim to go kayaking?

There is no formal legal requirement in Lithuania, but we strongly recommend being able to swim. Even with a life vest you may end up in the water unexpectedly, and basic swimming skills let you calmly perform a self-rescue, reach the shore or swim alongside the kayak without waiting for help. If your swimming skills are weak or you cannot swim, start in shallow, calm water close to shore, do not go out alone and always wear a quality life vest such as the NRS Chinook PFD. And seriously consider swimming lessons: it is an investment in your safety.

Read also

Where to kayak in Lithuania: the best routes and places (2026)

The 5 most common beginner mistakes when kayaking

How to prepare for your first kayak or SUP trip: a checklist

Apvirtimas kajake yra vienas didžiausių pradedančiųjų baimių.
