Point 65 Mezcal GTX Tandem is a two-person modular touring kayak with an enclosed cockpit, designed for speed, stability and longer trips. The manufacturer Mezcal calls it its best modular touring kayak to date. The tandem configuration disassembles into four modules, so the 543 cm long kayak can be transported inside a car.

Construction and details

"Point

Snap-Tap modular connector
The Mezcal modules are connected using an improved Snap-Tap system. The manufacturer states that the modules fit together very precisely, but assembly and disassembly remain easy. The tandem configuration consists of a nose, front cockpit, middle cockpit and rear modules.

"Point

Deck and front
The deck has two longitudinal ribs that strengthen the structure. The front is made much sharper for more precise water crossing and better course keeping. In a long two-seater hull this is especially noticeable on straight passages.

"Point

Rudder
The rudder is based on the integrated rudder systems found on Point 65's Freya and Bourbon 17 expedition kayaks. The manufacturer has refined it to provide less drag and faster response. For a long kayak, the rudder helps to keep the kayak on course in crosswinds.

"Point

AIR seats and luggage
The seats are minimalist, inflatable and ergonomic, each paddler can adjust them with a hand pump. There is a dry hatch in the middle module, and a flat tray area for small items in the forward cockpit.

Technical data

Length: 543 cm
Width: 60 cm
Height: 32 cm
Weight: 35 kg
Maximum load capacity: 280 kg
Nose module: 107 x 42.5 x 27 cm
Front cockpit module: 158 x 60 x 32 cm
Middle cockpit module: 147 x 60 x 32 cm
Rear module: 160 x 60 x 27 cm
Luggage hatches: dry hatch in the middle module

What does 280 kg load capacity mean?

The manufacturer states that the Mezcal GTX Tandem has a maximum load capacity of 280 kg, and the kayak itself weighs 35 kg. The load capacity includes both paddlers and all equipment.

For example, 85 kg and 70 kg paddlers with 25 kg of equipment for a day trip make up 180 kg, which is well below the limit. 90 kg and 80 kg paddlers with 60 kg of tent, food and water for a multi-day hike make up 230 kg, which is still within 280 kg. The manufacturer does not publish an optimal load range.

Who is the Point 65 Mezcal GTX Tandem suitable for?

✓ Couples and friends who want to paddle in one kayak

✓ For multi-day hikes for two with a tent and food

✓ For those who transport a double kayak inside the car, not on the roof

✓ For those living in an apartment where there is no place to store a long, solid kayak

✓ For lakes and the seaside, where speed and good course control are important

The Point 65 Mezcal GTX Tandem allows two people to paddle a long touring kayak without a trailer or roof rack. The manufacturer's warranty is 2 years.
