Lithuania is a paradise for water sports and fishing fans. 3 000+ lakes, dozens of rivers, the Curonian Lagoon: every water calls for a different kayak. In this article we compare two manufacturers: NuCanoe (JAV) ir Galaxy Kayaks (Spain). Both are sold in Lithuania through VAKA Sport, but they are made for very different anglers. The Galaxy Kayaks line includes both traditional paddle kayaks and premium pedal kayaks.

How did we choose the models?

All models are sit on top kayaks designed specifically for fishing. We compare them on stability, customisation options, propulsion and suitability for different waters. Prices are not used in the comparison.

The models in detail

NuCanoe Unlimited Max: a fishing platform

The Unlimited Max is the largest boat in the NuCanoe line, and its 107 cm width makes it the most stable in the sit on top class. It is designed for stand up fishing: you can stand, move around the deck and cast in any direction without worrying about capsizing.

✔ Integrated SternPod and battery holder systems
✔ Ready for an electric motor, up to 3 hp
✔ The largest deck area in the NuCanoe line
✔ Plug & Play: paddle holders, rod holders, fish finder brackets

Suits: experienced anglers, stand up fishing, lakes and lagoons.

NuCanoe Unlimited: as wide as a platform

104 cm wide: this is not so much a kayak as a floating fishing platform. Standing on the Unlimited feels like standing on a deck. You can fit an electric motor of up to 3 hp. Popular with hunters in wetlands and stand up fishing enthusiasts.

✔ Incredible stability: standing up, you forget you are in a kayak
✔ Motor friendly: integrated motor mount position
✔ Roomy deck with lots of space for gear
✘ Weighs about 40 kg, so you need a trolley or a trailer

Suits: anglers who fish standing up and want a motor and maximum stability.

NuCanoe Flint: light and nimble

The Flint is NuCanoe's answer for those who value low weight and manoeuvrability. At 27 kg you can lift it on your own and get it to the water without a trailer. Its 305 cm length makes it easy to manoeuvre on rivers, narrow channels and lakes with snags.

✔ The lightest in the NuCanoe line at 27 kg
✔ Manoeuvrable, good for rivers and narrow waters
✔ Still made for fishing: gear mounting points
✘ Narrower than the Unlimited: stable, but not for standing

Suits: anglers on river trips and mixed water routes.

Galaxy Alboran FX: a great start

The Alboran FX is Galaxy's answer for those buying their first fishing kayak. An 80 cm width gives good stability, a roomy enough deck and calm handling. The HDPE plastic hull resists impacts and abrasion, is durable and needs almost no maintenance.

✔ Stable and comfortable for beginners
✔ Compact, easier to transport than a NuCanoe
✔ Ready for rod holders and gear
✘ Not really suited to stand up fishing

Suits: first time kayak buyers, lakes, family fishing.

Galaxy Wildcat: speed and fishing together

The Wildcat is one of the most popular Galaxy kayaks in Lithuania. Its 85 cm width gives better stability than the Alboran, yet the Wildcat stays nimble and fast. It handles well both on calm lakes and near the sea.

✔ Fast and stable at the same time
✔ Good fishing position with a low seat
✔ Suits fishing and active paddling
✘ Fewer customisation options than a NuCanoe

Suits: active anglers who want both speed and stability.

Galaxy Supernova FX: a premium pedal fishing kayak

The Supernova FX is in a different category: it is a pedal kayak with the Cyclone Pedal Drive system. The pedals move you forwards and backwards, while your hands stay free to cast, retrieve and work the fish finder. At 398 cm long and 86 cm wide, it is a big, stable and truly advanced kayak.

✔ Cyclone Pedal Drive: forwards and backwards, completely hands free
✔ Compatible with a Torqeedo electric motor
✔ Three ways to move: pedals, motor, paddle
✔ Premium equipment out of the box: seat, rudder, pedal system
✘ The largest and heaviest in the Galaxy line

Suits: experienced anglers who need their hands free and want cutting edge technology.

Galaxy Supernova Jr: a compact pedal kayak

The Supernova Jr is the younger brother of the Supernova FX: the same Cyclone Pedal Drive philosophy in a more compact format. At 320 cm long and 84 cm wide it is easier to transport and handier in narrow waters, while keeping hands free fishing. The hand controlled rudder gives precise manoeuvrability.

✔ Cyclone Pedal Drive: hands free fishing
✔ Rudder with hand control
✔ More compact than the FX, easier to transport
✔ Suits both narrow and more open waters
✘ Less deck space than the Supernova FX

Suits: anglers who want a pedal kayak but fish a variety of waters.

Which system is better?

NuCanoe : if fishing is a serious hobby or sport and you want a platform with maximum stability. The Unlimited and Unlimited Max are the best stand up fishing platforms. The Flint is ideal for river trips.

Galaxy Alboran FX / Wildcat : if you are looking for a reliable paddle kayak without unnecessary complexity. A great first or second kayak.

Galaxy Supernova FX / Jr : if you want a pedal kayak that leaves your hands completely free. This is the top class of Galaxy fishing kayaks, aimed at tech minded anglers.

Conclusion

All these kayaks are sold through the VAKA Sport shop. Each model is for a different angler and different waters. If you cannot decide, get in touch and we will help you choose.

Safety on the water

Always wear a life jacket when kayaking. For fishing we recommend NRS Chinook Fishing PFD : it has pockets for tools and rod holder slots, so it does not get in the way when fishing. For more on safety gear, read our life jacket comparison.
