NuCanoe is no ordinary kayaks manufacturer. It is a company born from the idea that a watercraft could be truly versatile: not a kayak, not a canoe, but something in between. Here we tell you how NuCanoe began, how it differs from other manufacturers and which models are available in Lithuania through VAKA Sport.
How did NuCanoe begin?
The NuCanoe story begins with Tim Niemier, who had earlier founded Ocean Kayak, one of the largest kayak manufacturers in the world. Niemier had a vision: to create a boat that would suit everyone and everything. The first NuCanoe prototype was built in early 2006, while it was still part of the Wild Design company.
In autumn 2006 Niemier teamed up with Blake Young, who became co owner and is now NuCanoe's CEO. Young knew nothing about kayaks or canoes, but he saw the opportunity to build a versatile boat that almost anyone could use for almost anything. With the growing popularity of kayak fishing, kayak hunting and active leisure, that opportunity became reality.
Today NuCanoe, Inc. operates out of Bellingham, Washington, and is recognised as one of the most innovative fishing kayak manufacturers on the US market.
How is NuCanoe different from other kayaks?
The main difference with NuCanoe is its hybrid design. It is not a traditional kayak with a closed hull, and it is not an open canoe. A NuCanoe has high sides like a canoe but an open sit on top deck like a kayak. The result is a stable, roomy and dry boat that is comfortable for fishing, hunting or simply paddling.
Another important feature is the modular system. NuCanoe kayaks have aluminium Freedom Track rails (over 6 metres long on the Unlimited) on which you can mount practically anything: seats, rod holders, electronics, motors. Everything slides, swaps and adapts to your needs. This is not a simple kayak with a few mounting points: it is a real platform you can set up differently for every trip.

NuCanoe Flint: compact and versatile
NuCanoe Flint is a 343 cm (11'3") kayak weighing just 28.5 kg. It is the lightest and most compact NuCanoe model. Despite its small size, the Flint carries up to 170 kg and has 4 built in rod holders, side pockets for tools and 5 Freedom Track rails. The patented side handle doubles as a paddle holder. Supplied with a Fusion seat.
What makes the Flint unique: it is one of the most compact kayaks in its class that can be both paddled and used with a motor. Third party reviews praise it for its stability and speed.
NuCanoe Unlimited: the flagship model
NuCanoe Unlimited is the 381 cm (12'6") long flagship NuCanoe kayak. It is a large, stable platform, 104 cm (41") wide, with more than 6.7 metres of aluminium Freedom Track. The Unlimited hull is designed for use with a motor, so it has a special shape optimised for performance. It weighs 38 kg.
The Unlimited has the Fusion 360 seat, which swivels 360 degrees so you can fish in any direction. 7 scupper holes and dedicated drainage channels keep the deck dry. 11 gear mounting points make the Unlimited one of the most customisable kayaks on the market.
NuCanoe Unlimited MAX
NuCanoe Unlimited MAX is an upgraded version of the Unlimited with a higher load capacity and a reinforced hull. Made for the most demanding anglers who need maximum capacity for gear, a motor and passengers.

Safety on the water
Always wear a life jacket. For fishing we recommend NRS Chinook Fishing PFD : it has pockets for tools and rod holder slots, so it does not get in the way when fishing. For more on safety gear, read our life jacket comparison.
Is a NuCanoe kayak suitable for a beginner?
Yes, especially the Flint. The wide hull and low centre of gravity make it very stable even for inexperienced paddlers. The open deck makes it easy to get on and off. If you plan to use a motor, you will need to fit some simple equipment, but it is not complicated.
How is NuCanoe different from Galaxy Kayaks?
NuCanoe is an American manufacturer with a hybrid kayak and canoe design and the modular Freedom Track system. Galaxy Kayaks is a European manufacturer with a traditional sit on top design and integrated systems. NuCanoe stands out for greater customisation and versatility, while Galaxy Kayaks offers more integrated features straight out of the box. Both make quality kayaks, and the choice depends on your needs.
Can you use a NuCanoe at sea?
NuCanoe kayaks are designed for lakes, rivers and inshore waters. In calm conditions you can also use them at sea for inshore fishing, but they are not ideal in big waves or far from shore. If you plan to fish mostly on Lithuanian lakes and rivers, a NuCanoe will be an excellent choice.
