The NuCanoe Unlimited is the flagship kayak from American manufacturer NuCanoe, built for fishing, hunting and active leisure on the water. It is no ordinary sit on top kayak. It is a modular platform that adapts to your needs, not the other way round. Here we take a detailed look at the Unlimited's construction, specifications and who it suits best.
Who is the NuCanoe Unlimited for?
The NuCanoe Unlimited is made for people who need more than an ordinary kayak. Anglers who want room for all their gear. Hunters who need a stable platform on the water. Families who want a roomy, safe boat to enjoy together. The Unlimited does all of this on one platform.
The main reason the Unlimited is so popular in the US: you can stand in it. The wide 104 cm (41 inch) hull and low centre of gravity give it so much stability that many anglers stand up confidently while fishing. That is a big advantage over traditional sit on top kayaks.
What are the NuCanoe Unlimited's specifications?
The NuCanoe Unlimited is 381 cm (12'6") long, 104 cm (41") wide and weighs 38 kg (84 lbs). The hull is rotomoulded from HDPE (high density polyethylene), which ensures impact resistance and durability.
The Unlimited has 7 self bailing scupper holes and dedicated drainage channels that direct water off the deck. That means the deck stays dry even in a downpour or in waves.
The Freedom Track system: what is it and why does it matter?
Freedom Track is a NuCanoe patented aluminium track system built into the kayak hull. On the Unlimited the Freedom Track runs for more than 6.7 metres (22+ feet). You can mount any accessories with standard T track fittings on these tracks: rod holders, electronics mounts, seats, handles and motor mounting plates.
The key point is that everything slides and repositions without any tools. You can set up kayak one configuration before a morning fishing session and a completely different one in the evening. 11 mounting points give you practically unlimited freedom to adapt the Unlimited to the situation.
What seat does the NuCanoe Unlimited use?
The Unlimited comes with the Fusion 360 seat. It is an ergonomic seat that swivels 360 degrees on the Freedom Track. In practice this means you can fish in any direction without twisting your whole body. The seat adjusts for height and tilt, has a high backrest and stays comfortable even through long days of fishing.
The Fusion 360 seat mounts on the Freedom Track, so you can move it closer to the bow, stern or centre depending on how you load your gear or how many people are on board.
Is the NuCanoe Unlimited suitable for a motor?
Yes, and it is one of the Unlimited's strongest features. The hull shape is specially designed for optimal performance with a motor. The stern is adapted for mounting an electric motor, and the Freedom Track lets you fit a motor mount anywhere.
Many Unlimited owners in the US use electric trolling motors, which let them move quietly through fishing spots without paddling. This is especially handy on longer outings or when you need precise position control.
NuCanoe Unlimited vs traditional fishing kayaks
Traditional sit on top fishing kayaks usually have a fixed seat, a few rod holders and perhaps a gear track or two. The NuCanoe Unlimited is essentially a different category. Its hybrid design (high sides like a canoe, an open deck like a kayak) gives more space and keeps you drier. The modular Freedom Track system lets you configure the kayak afresh for every trip.
The downside: the Unlimited weighs 38 kg, so lifting it onto a car roof on your own will be hard. It is also more expensive than most traditional sit on top models. But if you are looking for a kayak for the long term and want maximum versatility, the Unlimited is an investment that pays off.

Frequently asked questions
Safety on the water
Always wear a life jacket. For fishing we recommend NRS Chinook Fishing PFD : it has pockets for tools and rod holder slots, so it does not get in the way when fishing. For more on safety gear, read our life jacket comparison.
How many people fit in the NuCanoe Unlimited?
The NuCanoe Unlimited is officially made for one paddler, but in practice two adults with fishing gear will fit comfortably. Some owners even paddle with a dog or a child. A second seat is easy to fit on the Freedom Track.
Is the NuCanoe Unlimited suitable for a beginner?
Yes. The wide hull and low centre of gravity make the Unlimited very stable, so even a beginner will feel confident. But bear in mind the weight (38 kg) and the price. If you are looking for a simpler first NuCanoe, we recommend the NuCanoe Flint, which weighs only 28.5 kg.
What warranty does the NuCanoe Unlimited have?
NuCanoe gives a limited warranty on the hull against manufacturing defects. The exact warranty terms and service in Lithuania are handled by VAKA Sport as the official NuCanoe representative in the Baltic states. Contact us for details.
