The Newport NK180 HD is a 600 W brushless electric kayak motor with 65 lb of thrust, built for the NuCanoe EPS system.
✔ 600 W and 65 lb of thrust at 24 V: a 1.8 HP equivalent from a 6.5 kg motor
✔ A brushless direct-drive motor: quiet, maintenance-free and suitable for salt water
✔ A digital controller with a display: shows battery percentage and voltage in real time
✔ An HD lift lever with a micro-pulley: the motor lifts with one hand and stays out of the way on the deck
✔ A reinforced steering triangle and M12 connectors: HD series construction built to last
Newport NK180 HD is a brushless electric kayak motor built for anglers who need to get farther than they can paddle and get back against the wind. The HD series is the new generation of Newport kayak motors: the same 600 W brushless motor, but with a reinforced build, more reliable connectors and a redesigned lift system.

Key features
600 W power, 65 lb of thrust (1.8 HP equivalent) at 24 V
Brushless direct-drive motor no brushes to replace and no gearbox to hum
Maximum current 25 A less than half of what brushed motors with similar thrust demand
Motor weight 6.5 kg, shaft length 55 cm
Digital speed controller with a display battery percentage and voltage
19 cm two-blade propeller, tilt angles of 10, 20 and 30 degrees
Reinforced steering triangle and an HD lift lever with a Ronstan micro-pulley
Upsized M12 connectors and a cable tension unit: the most common failure point, reinforced
Conformal-coated electronics protection against moisture and salt
Suitable for fresh and salt water, 2-year manufacturer warranty
Construction and controls

Brushless direct-drive motor
Direct drive means there is no gearbox between the motor and the propeller: fewer parts, less noise and higher efficiency. In practice you see it in the current draw: a 65 lb thrust motor draws up to 25 A, so the same battery lasts noticeably longer than with a brushed motor. Quiet running matters in shallows, where fish react to sound under the hull.

Digital controller with a display
The controller shows not only speed but also battery charge percentage and voltage. This is different from the usual five-LED bars: you see the exact number and can decide whether it is still worth going farther from shore. The controller connects with a single connector and mounts in a convenient spot on the deck.

HD lift lever
The lift lever is redesigned with a Ronstan micro-pulley and a stainless steel carabiner, so the motor lifts with one hand and stays low-profile when not in use. The new lever is bent rather than straight, so it is easier to handle, but the motor can no longer be lowered as shallow as on the previous version.

Reinforced steering triangle
The steering triangle is where all the steering forces pass through. In the HD version it is structurally reinforced, so it withstands higher loads and flexes less. Together with the upsized M12 connection cable connectors, this is the main difference from the previous generation.

19 cm two-blade propeller
The propeller is two-blade, 19 cm in diameter, the same as on the NK180PRO. Two blades give less drag when paddling with the motor raised and snag less on weeds in shallow spots. The tilt angle is set in three positions: 10, 20 and 30 degrees.
What is included
NK180 HD motor
HD steering triangle
HD lift lever with a stainless steel carabiner and a Ronstan micro-pulley
HD connection cable with upsized M12 connectors
HD digital speed controller with a display
Four-bolt aluminum motor bracket
The battery is not included. A 24 V source is required: one 24 V battery or two 12 V batteries connected in series.
Who is the NK180 HD for?
The motor is made for kayak anglers who want to reach farther spots and come back without tiring, and for those who fish windy open water where holding position with a paddle is hard. It mounts to the NuCanoe EPS system, so a model-specific QuickConnect mounting and control kit is required and is bought separately.

The main difference from the previous NK180PRO generation is not power but construction: the same 600 W, but with the areas that used to wear first now reinforced. If you are choosing a motor for the long term and fish in salt water, the HD version is a case where the extra cost pays off.
