Speed and glide on the water
A PVC boat is designed to be used with a motor. Without one, it is very slow and hard to handle. The wide inflatable tubes create a lot of drag in the water. Even with oars and two people rowing, a quality 3.3 m PVC boat moves at about 3 to 4 km/h. A fishing kayak with a double-blade paddle easily reaches 5 to 7 km/h. The long, narrow hull is made for efficient glide. One person in a kayak covers the same distance as two in a boat, and uses less energy. In practical terms: in half a day in a kayak you will cover several corners of a lake, while in a boat without a motor you would reach only one.Quiet and stealth
Fish hear and feel. A PVC boat makes noise in several ways: the motor (even an electric one), lifting your arms over the rubber tubes, and knocks when stepping on a hard floor. A kayak glides through the water practically silently. The paddle can be lifted and lowered without noise. A kayak sits low, so the angler's silhouette is smaller. This is especially important in clear water and weed beds, where fish react to every movement. The American fishing magazine Kayak Angler Magazine has noted more than once that a kayak's stealth advantage is one of the main reasons anglers switch from boats. When fishing for pike or trout in clear water, it can decide whether the fish bites or not.Draft and shallows
A PVC boat loaded with two anglers and gear draws about 15 to 25 cm (depending on the model and weight). With a motor on the transom the draft is even greater. A kayak draws about 8 to 15 cm. This lets you get into shallow lake margins, backwaters and river shallows, where bigger fish often hold. In a boat you simply cannot go into such places, especially with a motor.Wind
Here a PVC boat has an obvious problem. The big inflatable tubes act like sails. As soon as the wind picks up to 15 to 20 km/h, a boat without a motor becomes hard to control. It simply gets blown along. A kayak sits low and has a smaller wind profile. In addition, most fishing kayaks have a rudder system that lets you correct your course even in strong wind. That does not mean a kayak is unaffected by wind. But in the same situation, where a PVC boat without a motor becomes an uncontrollable balloon, a kayak is still manageable.Getting ready to fish
Here is what happens when the morning starts by the lake. PVC boat: you unload it from the car (1 to 3 bags, 30 to 55 kg), pump it up (5 to 10 min), lay the hard floor (5 to 10 min), fit the transom, hang the motor, connect the battery, and set up the rod holders and fish finder (all bought separately). Realistically, 30 to 45 minutes pass from arrival to first cast. Kayak: you take it off the car roof or trailer, push it into the water and sit down. The rod holders are already integrated. The lidded storage compartments are already in place. If you have a fish finder, you connect it with one cable. From arrival to first cast: 5 to 10 minutes. After fishing, it is the same story. A PVC boat has to be rinsed, dried (it cannot be stored wet, as mold makes the PVC deteriorate), rolled up and packed. A kayak you rinse, put on the roof and drive home.Fishing functionality
A PVC boat was born as a means of transport, not as a fishing platform. So everything you need for fishing is bought separately and mounted in an improvised way: rod holders are glued or screwed to the tubes, the fish finder mount hangs on the transom, and there is either no seat or just a plain plank. A fishing kayak is designed for fishing from the start. Standard equipment includes: 2 to 4 integrated rod holders (flush-mount type), gear tracks (for example the Railblaza or YakAttack system), closed storage compartments (hatches), a tankwell at the back for a cooler or other gear, and a comfortable adjustable seat with a backrest. In a fishing kayak everything is within reach and everything has its place. Achieving the same level of organization in a PVC boat is difficult and expensive.Durability and service life
A properly maintained PVC boat lasts 5 to 10 years. After a few seasons the PVC starts to harden from UV, and the seams can start to leak air. Every season you need to check the chambers for leaks and sometimes repair them. A fishing kayak is made of rotomolded polyethylene. It is the same plastic used for playground equipment and outdoor containers. It practically does not age, does not crack from UV and needs no maintenance. A kayak lasts 15 to 20 years or more with no maintenance at all. Resale value differs too. A used kayak after 5 years still holds 50 to 70 percent of its value. A used PVC boat's value drops to 20 to 30 percent after 5 years.Price
The right comparison is not "the cheapest boat versus the cheapest kayak", but "a complete fishing system versus a complete fishing system". A PVC boat for fishing (real price): a boat with a hard floor and keel (Kolibri KM-330 or similar), about 500 to 800 EUR. An electric motor, about 200 to 400 EUR. A battery, 100 to 200 EUR. A pump (if not included), 40 to 60 EUR. Rod holders, a fish finder mount and extra accessories, about 50 to 150 EUR. The whole system: 890 to 1,610 EUR. A fishing kayak: Galaxy Kayaks models from 600 EUR, Bonafide fishing kayaks from 1,200 EUR, NuCanoe modular kayaks from 1,500 EUR. Rod holders and gear tracks are already included. No motor needed (but you can add an electric one if you want). The whole system: 600 to 2,000 EUR. As you can see, the price ranges overlap. A mid-quality PVC boat fishing system costs as much as an entry-level fishing kayak, but at this price the kayak already has everything you need for fishing. When to choose a PVC boat
A PVC boat is still a good choice in certain cases. You need to carry 3 or more people. Kayaks are mostly single or two-seaters. If you fish as a group of three or with your family, a boat is more convenient. You already have a motor. If you have a petrol or electric motor and want to use it, a PVC boat is the natural platform. You need to stand. Although there are kayaks you can stand on (especially wider fishing models such as the Bonafide or NuCanoe), a PVC boat with a hard floor still gives more room to stand. Price matters most to you. If your budget is up to 300 EUR, you will get a decent PVC boat for that money, but not a kayak. When to choose a kayak
You fish alone or as a pair. That is kayak territory. A single kayak gives you complete freedom: you get ready quickly, reach the fishing spot quickly and glide quietly up to the fish. You fish often. The more often you fish, the more the time spent assembling and dismantling a PVC boat adds up. A kayak eliminates this problem completely. Quiet matters to you. For spin anglers, fly anglers and others who need to avoid spooking fish, a kayak is irreplaceable. You want to invest for the long term. A kayak lasts twice as long as a PVC boat and needs zero maintenance. You fish shallow spots. In river deltas, shallow lakes and among reeds, a kayak gets through where a boat gets stuck. The most popular fishing kayaksGalaxy Kayaks Strike

Final recommendation
If you are an angler deciding between a PVC boat and a kayak, answer one question: will you use a motor for fishing? If yes, a PVC boat with a motor is the logical choice. But remember that the whole system will cost from 900 EUR and take effort to assemble every time. If not (or you do not know yet), seriously consider a fishing kayak. For a similar price you get a faster, quieter, more comfortable and longer-lasting fishing platform that is ready for the water in 5 minutes.
