Water sports with children are one of the best ways to spend time together. But they take a bit more planning than paddling on your own. The right kayak, safe gear and a sensible route turn a family trip on the water into a fun adventure rather than a stressful experience.

From what age can children kayak or paddle board?
A simple rule of thumb: from age 3, children can be passengers in a kayak or on a paddle board with an adult. From 8 to 10, children can paddle themselves (with supervision). From 12 to 14, many can handle a paddle board or a children's kayak.
It is important to understand that every child is different. Some four year olds feel completely at home on the water, while some eight year olds are scared. There is no need to rush. The first trips should be short (30 to 60 minutes), on calm water and with the option to head back to shore at any time.
Which kayak is right for a family?
Two seater (tandem) kayaks are the best fit for families with children. The adult paddles at the back, while the child sits in front and can simply enjoy the ride or try paddling.
Galaxy Kayaks tandem kayaks is a great choice for families. Galaxy Tahiti Tandem (from 699 EUR) can be paddled by one or two people and has a roomy deck and a stable hull. Galaxy Reef Tandem (499 EUR) is the best choice for couples and families who want a two seater kayak at an affordable price. Between the two seats there is a moulded middle platform where a child up to about 10 years old or a small dog can sit comfortably. Fully equipped with two seats, paddles and bungee nets. 220 kg load capacity and a compact 352 cm length for easy transport.
If your child is older (10+) and wants their own kayak, the Galaxy Reef Junior (199 EUR) is a model made specifically for smaller paddlers: shorter, lighter and more stable than adult kayaks.
For an adult paddling alongside a child, we recommend the Galaxy Reef Adult (299 EUR). It is a stable sit on top kayak with a paddle included, ideal for leisure and easy to transport.
Native Watercraft Ultimate FX 15 PRO Tandem is a premium choice for families who want one kayak for the long term: it paddles beautifully with one adult, two adults, or an adult and a child.
Is a paddle board suitable for a family with children?
A large, stable SUP board is great for family paddling. Younger children (3 to 6) usually sit or stand at the front while the adult paddles. Older children can have their own board.
When choosing a board for the family, look at the load capacity. If you plan to paddle with a child on one board, it needs to carry your weight and your child's together (usually a load capacity of 120+ kg). In our beginner's guide you will find specific recommendations by budget and needs.
What safety gear do children need?
A life jacket is mandatory. For everyone on the water, especially children. A children's life jacket must be the right size: one that is too big can slip over the head, one that is too small will not give enough buoyancy. NRS has dedicated children's life jackets, while WALLYS and Baltic Lifejackets offer budget alternatives.
Helmet is recommended for children in a kayak, especially on rivers or where there are rocks. On a calm lake a helmet is usually not needed, but it depends on the child's age and experience.
Water shoes. Children love jumping into the water and running along the shore. Neoprene shoes protect against stones, shells and cold. Even in summer, wet feet on cold stones are no fun.
Sun protection. On the water the sun reflects and burns faster. A hat, sunglasses and water resistant sunscreen are a must, especially for children.
How do you plan your first family trip on the water?
A few practical tips for your first trip with children:
Choose a calm lake with no current and an easy launch point. In our article on the best places to paddle you will find suitable options. Plan a short route (up to 1 hour). Children tire faster than you think. Bring snacks and water. Best time: a warm summer day with no strong wind. Have a plan B: if your child does not enjoy it, make sure you can get back quickly.
And most importantly, do not set ambitious goals for your first trip. The goal is for your child to enjoy it, not to cover a long distance.
Frequently asked questions
Can a child paddle a board alone?
From age 10 to 12, many children can paddle on their own on a smaller paddle boards or a children's kayak. But supervision is still essential: an adult should paddle alongside on their own board or kayak. Never leave a child alone on the water, even if they are a good swimmer.
What size life jacket should you choose for a child?
Children's life vests are sized by weight, not age. One size fits children of 15 to 30 kg, another 30 to 40 kg. The jacket must fit snugly so it does not slip over the head when pulled upwards. If it rides up above the shoulders, it is too big. In our safety category you will find suitable options.
Which is cheaper for a family: a kayak or a paddle board?
A paddle board is usually cheaper. A good inflatable family board costs from 250 EUR, while a tandem kayak starts at 499 EUR. But a kayak is more comfortable on longer trips (children can sit rather than stand) and safer for small children (lower centre of gravity, less chance of falling off). If your children are under 6, a kayak is often the better choice. If they are older, a paddle board gives more freedom.
