A buoyancy aid is not an optional accessory but a vital part of water sports. Even so, most people buy one at random, without thinking about weight, buoyancy or the type of sport. In this article we explain how to choose the right jacket so it really protects you when you need it most.

Why is a buoyancy aid essential?

The statistics are unforgiving: most drowning accidents in water sports happen not because people cannot swim, but because of an unexpected fall, cold water shock or a knock to the head. A jacket keeps your head above water even in the worst case and buys time for help to arrive. In Lithuania there is no legal requirement to wear a jacket when kayaking (except for children under 12), but it is good practice followed by every experienced paddler.

Jacket types: the EN ISO 12402 system

TypeBuoyancyWhat it is for
50N (Type III)50 NewtonsKayak, SUP, sailing: in sheltered waters with help close by
100N (Type II)100 NewtonsSea and more open waters, when help is not close by
150N+ (Type I)150+ NewtonsSea leisure, ferries, professional use
For kayaking and SUP on Lithuanian waters, a 50N jacket is right: it is compact, does not restrict movement and is comfortable for long periods.

How do I choose the right size?

A buoyancy aid is sized by chest size (not clothing size). Standard sizes:
  • XS/S: up to 80 cm chest
  • M: 80–90 cm
  • L: 90–100 cm
  • XL/XXL: over 100 cm
The jacket must fit firmly: it must not ride up when you raise your arms. You will wear it the whole time you are on the water, so comfort is critical.

5 mistakes when choosing a jacket

  1. Buying one that is too big : the jacket rides up and does not keep your head above water.
  2. Choosing by colour, not function : a nice design does not help in an emergency.
  3. Not wearing it : a jacket lying in the back of the kayak does not help.
  4. Not buying a dedicated one for children : an adult jacket does not work properly on a child.
  5. Not adjusting the buckles : after buying, all the buckles and straps need to be adjusted properly.

Conclusion

A buoyancy aid is the cheapest and most important purchase before any water sports outing. Do not worry that it will feel uncomfortable: modern 50N jackets are light, compact and you will hardly notice them. Browse our range of jackets →
