A life jacket is the thing you hope you will never need. But when you do need it, it has to work. Not sometime in the future, not after a few minutes, but immediately. In more than a decade of selling water sports gear, we have seen enough situations to say firmly: a life jacket on the water is not an option but a necessity. Whether you paddle a kayak, stand on a SUP board, sail or simply enjoy a day by the lake with your family, the right life jacket has to be on you. In this guide we review the Baltic Lifejackets range, which currently includes 33 products, and compare it with the WALLYS and NRS Chinook vests you will also find in our store.

Why a life jacket is essential on the water

The statistics are unforgiving: the vast majority of deaths on the water happen without a life jacket. This applies both to experienced swimmers and to those who think "it is just the shoreline, nothing will happen". Water does not forgive mistakes. Hypothermia, current, a sudden wind, a cramp or simple fatigue can become a deadly combination within minutes.

In the European Union, buoyancy equipment on the water is governed by the EN ISO 12402 standard, which sets clear buoyancy classes and quality requirements. In Lithuania, although the specific requirements depend on the body of water and the type of activity, the general rule is simple: on the water, be prepared for the worst-case scenario. This is especially relevant in the cold season, when cold water drastically reduces survival time.

Buoyancy classes: what 50N, 100N and 150N mean

Before choosing a vest, you need to understand buoyancy classes. It is not complicated, but many buyers skip this information and choose a vest based only on price or color. That is a mistake that can cost dearly. The classes show how many newtons of buoyancy the vest provides, and this directly determines the situations in which it is effective.

50N (buoyancy aid) is made for a conscious person who can swim, in calm water. It is the most popular class for kayaking, canoeing and SUP. The vest is light and does not restrict movement, but it will not turn an unconscious person face up. Suitable for lakes, calm rivers and the shoreline. It is the most common choice among kayakers and SUP fans in Lithuania.

100N (life jacket) gives more buoyancy and in calm water can turn an unconscious person face up. It is the minimum class for children and is recommended for open water. Suitable for sailing, motorboats and more active paddling.

150N (offshore life jacket) is made for the open sea and difficult conditions. It turns an unconscious person face up even in waves. These are most often inflatable vests, compact and comfortable to wear all day.

275N is made for extreme use in offshore conditions, mostly by professionals and oil platform workers. VAKA Sport does not carry vests in this class, but it is important to know it exists.

Baltic Lifejackets: the Swedish quality standard

Baltic Lifejackets is a Swedish company that has made buoyancy equipment since 1979. In more than 40 years it has become one of the most trusted manufacturers in Europe. When it comes to safety on the water, "made in Sweden" is not just a marketing phrase. It means strict quality control, long experience and products used by both enthusiasts and professionals in Scandinavia, where water sports are a way of life. Every vest is designed and tested with real users in Scandinavian waters, where conditions are often tougher than on Lithuanian lakes. This means Baltic products have a safety margin that gives extra confidence.

VAKA Sport currently offers 33 different Baltic Lifejackets products, covering everything from the simplest buoyancy aid to professional inflatable vests. Below we review each category and help you choose the right model.

Baltic Lifejackets for kayaks and canoes

For paddlers, the most important thing is that the vest does not restrict movement and is comfortable sitting in a kayak for hours. A classic 50N vest with a shorter front and an open back is the best choice. Baltic offers several specialized models:

Baltic Canoe 50N (54.99 EUR) is the classic paddler's buoyancy aid. Comfortable, light, with adjustable straps. A great choice for both beginners and experienced paddlers. It is one of the most popular models among our customers.

Baltic Canoe Hydro 50N (54.99 EUR) has the same base as the Canoe, but with hydration system compatibility. If you plan longer trips, being able to drink without taking off the vest is a big plus.

Baltic Paddler 50N (54.99 EUR) is made specifically for paddlers. The ergonomic design lets you move your arms and body freely. If you are just starting and choosing your first kayak, this model will be a great start.

Baltic Adventure 50N (104.99 EUR) is a premium vest with extra pockets and improved straps. Made for longer expeditions where comfort and function are the priority.

Baltic Lifejackets for SUP

SUP calls for a different vest design than kayaking. Here it matters that the vest is as low-profile as possible and does not get in the way when standing on the board. VAKA Sport sells only inflatable SUP boards, and these models pair perfectly with them. Note that many SUP fans try to use a regular vest and are disappointed, because it interferes with balance. Vests designed specifically for SUP solve this problem:

Baltic SUP Pro 50N (99.99 EUR) is designed specifically for SUP. A low-profile design, light and barely noticeable on the body. A great choice for those who want safety without compromising on comfort.

Baltic SUP Elite (144.99 EUR) is the top SUP vest in the Baltic range. Premium materials, a minimalist design and maximum comfort. If SUP is a regular activity for you rather than a one-off try, this investment will pay off.

Baltic Lifejackets for fishing

NRS Chinook OS fishing PFD

Kayak fishing calls for a vest with pockets, D-rings for tools and a comfortable design for long periods of sitting. Beginner kayak anglers often forget that the vest must be comfortable not only standing but also sitting.

Baltic Outdoor 50N (99.99 EUR) has pockets for small items, a comfortable seated design and enough room to attach fishing gear.

Baltic Stinger 50N (104.99 EUR) is another great choice for anglers. With extra pockets and a reinforced design, it suits more active fishing.

If you fish from a kayak, we also recommend looking at the WALLYS and NRS Chinook fishing vests, which are always in stock. The NRS Chinook is especially popular with anglers worldwide thanks to its handy pockets and ergonomic design. The full range of safety equipment can be found here.

Baltic Lifejackets for sailing

Sailors need vests that do not get in the way of working the lines and sails but still give reliable protection. What matters here is not only the buoyancy class but also the vest's profile, ventilation and the materials' resistance to salt water and UV. Baltic offers several models made specifically for this activity:

Baltic Genua (74.99 EUR) is a compact sailing vest with a comfortable design. Suitable for both day sailing and longer regattas.

Baltic Genua Pro (94.99 EUR) offers extra features: better ventilation, more adjustment points and a more durable construction.

Baltic Pro Sailor 100N (77.99-79.99 EUR) is a 100N class vest, suitable for more open waters. If you sail not only near the shore but farther out, the 100N class gives extra peace of mind.

Baltic Slim Pro (99.99-109.99 EUR) stands out for its especially slim profile. Worn under or over a jacket, it is barely noticeable and does not restrict movement.

Baltic Lifejackets for children

Children's safety on the water is a subject where there can be no compromise. The most important rule: for children, always choose 100N or a higher class, never 50N. A 50N buoyancy aid is made for an adult who can swim consciously. A child may not have that ability, especially in a stressful situation. It is the parents' responsibility to make sure the child's vest is the right size and class. Better to invest in a quality vest than to save where a child's life is at stake.

Baltic Bambi Supersoft 100N (94.99 EUR) is made for the youngest (3-15 kg). Soft and comfortable, with a crotch strap that stops the vest from sliding over the head. It has a handle on the back so you can easily lift the child out of the water.

Baltic Bamse 100N (74.99 EUR) is made for slightly older children. Comfortable, brightly colored (highly visible in the water) and with all the essential safety features.

Baltic Skipper 100N (49.99-79.99 EUR) suits older children and teenagers. Several size options let you find the right fit even for a fast-growing child. If you are planning family kayak trips, teach the whole family self-rescue techniques, because they can save lives.

Baltic Lifejackets for pets

Your four-legged companion on the water deserves safety too. Even dogs that swim well can get tired, scared or caught in a current that is too strong for them. Cats are rarer on the water, but Baltic has a solution for them as well.

Baltic Mascot for dogs (39.99-53.99 EUR) has a handy handle on the back that lets you quickly pull your pet out of the water. Several sizes, suitable for small to large breeds.

Baltic Pluto for dogs (34.99-44.99 EUR) is a more economical option, but still with all the essential safety features and a handle on the back.

Baltic Maja for cats (44.99 EUR) is designed specifically for smaller pets. If your cat travels with you on the water, this is the only specialized vest on the market.

Inflatable life jackets: the Baltic Mako and Legend series

Inflatable vests are the choice for those who value compactness and comfort. They are worn like a wide belt or a vest over the shoulders and inflate only when needed, automatically or manually. These are 150N and higher class products, made for more serious use on the open sea, sailing or on a motorboat. Inflatable vests must be checked regularly, and CO2 cylinders replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Baltic Mako automatic 165N (199.99 EUR) inflates automatically on contact with water. The ideal choice for sailors and motorboat users who want protection without discomfort.

Baltic Mako manual 165N (179.99 EUR) inflates when you pull the cord. A cheaper option than the automatic version, but it requires a conscious action. Suitable for experienced water sports enthusiasts.

The Baltic Legend 305 series are professional-level inflatable vests with 305N of buoyancy. A serious tool for serious waters. A series of several variants made for professionals and those who are regularly on the open sea.

Universal vests for general use

Not everyone needs a specialized vest. If you are looking for simple, reliable protection for family time by the water, swimming or the occasional boat trip, Baltic has excellent universal options:

Baltic Aqua 50N (33.99 EUR) is the most affordable Baltic model. Simple, reliable and meets all the standards. A great choice for families who want to have a few vests for time by the water.

Baltic Aqua Pro 50N (41.99 EUR) offers better comfort and a more durable construction than the basic Aqua model.

Baltic Mariner (59.99 EUR) is a universal vest suitable for a range of water activities. Comfortable design, good price.

Baltic Split Front 100N (55.99 EUR) is a 100N class universal vest with a front opening design. Easy to put on and take off, and it gives more buoyancy than 50N models.

How to choose the right size

Even the best vest will not work properly if it is the wrong size. A vest that is too big can slide over your head in the water, and one that is too small will restrict breathing and movement. Here is what you need to know:

Measure your chest. Measure at the widest part of your chest while breathing normally. This is the main measurement used to choose the size.

Follow the manufacturer's size chart. The Baltic size chart is on every product page in our store. Do not ignore it, because S, M and L can mean different measurements for different manufacturers.

The vest should be snug but not restrict breathing. When wearing the vest, you should be able to breathe freely and move your arms, but it should not move up and down freely. A simple test: ask someone to pull the vest up by the shoulders. If it easily slides up past ear level, it is too big.

Check it sitting down. If you will use the vest in a kayak, sit down and mimic paddling movements. The vest should not ride up and get in the way. Models with a shorter front and back, such as the Baltic Canoe or Baltic Paddler, are made for exactly this.

WALLYS and NRS: additional vests in the VAKA Sport range

WALLYS buoyancy vest

Besides Baltic Lifejackets, VAKA Sport also offers WALLYS and NRS vests. Both brands are always in stock, so you can order with fast delivery.

WALLYS vests offer good value for money and are popular among paddlers in the Baltic states. They suit both kayaking and general use on the water. WALLYS is a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable vest at an affordable price.

NRS Chinook is one of the most popular fishing vests in the world. NRS is an American company with decades of experience making water sports gear. The Chinook model has plenty of pockets, a comfortable high-back design (ideal for sitting in a kayak with a high seat) and is loved by anglers from North America to Europe. If you are looking for the best fishing kayak, the NRS Chinook will be a great addition.

The full range of safety equipment, including all three brands, can be found in our store. We also recommend browsing the water sports apparel category, where you will find wetsuits and other protective layers.

Frequently asked questions

Which life jacket should I choose for a kayak?

A 50N buoyancy aid suits a kayak if you paddle on calm water and can swim. We recommend the Baltic Canoe 50N or Baltic Paddler 50N as the best value for money for kayaks. If you fish from a kayak, choose models with pockets: the Baltic Outdoor 50N or NRS Chinook, which is always in our warehouse.

Do children need a life jacket on a kayak?

Yes, it is mandatory. For children we recommend only 100N class vests, never 50N. The 100N class can turn an unconscious child face up in calm water, while 50N cannot. Baltic Bambi Supersoft suits the youngest (3-15 kg), and the Baltic Bamse is for older children. Both vests have crotch straps and handles on the back.

What is the difference between a 50N and a 150N life jacket?

50N is a buoyancy aid made for a conscious swimmer in calm water. It helps you stay at the surface but will not turn an unconscious person over. 150N is a full life jacket that can turn an unconscious person face up even in waves. Vests of 150N and higher are most often inflatable (for example the Baltic Mako with 165N) and are made for the open sea, sailing or motorboats.

Do Baltic Lifejackets meet EU standards?

Yes, all Baltic Lifejackets products are made in Sweden and meet the EN ISO 12402 standard, the main European standard for buoyancy equipment. Baltic is one of the oldest and most trusted manufacturers in Europe, with more than 40 years of experience. Every product is certified and tested to strict Scandinavian quality requirements.

Do dogs need a life jacket?

We recommend one, especially when kayaking or boating. Even dogs that swim well can get tired, scared or caught in a current. Plus, a vest with a handle on the back lets you quickly pull your pet out of the water, which can be vital in a critical situation. Baltic Mascot and Baltic Pluto have handy handles and come in several sizes, suitable for small to large dog breeds.
