Wondering whether to buy a kayak or a SUP board? It is one of the most common questions from people getting into water sports. Both are great, but each suits a different person. In this article we set out the key differences so you can decide quickly and without regrets.

What is a SUP board and what is a kayak?

SUP board (Stand Up Paddle): a wide, stable board you stand on and paddle with a single long paddle. It is growing in popularity thanks to its simplicity and its value as a workout.

Kayak : a closed or open boat you sit in and paddle with a double bladed paddle. There are dozens of types, from leisure to fishing and racing.

Choose a SUP board if...

  • You want to train : SUP is great for balance, strengthens your core and is an ideal cross training tool for fans of yoga, fitness or water aerobics.
  • You plan to paddle on calm water : lakes, streams, places sheltered from the wind. Lithuanian nature is perfect for it.
  • You need a compact solution : an inflatable SUP fits in a backpack, so you can take it on a train or a plane.
  • You are a beginner and want quick results : you will be standing up and paddling sooner than in a kayak.
  • You love taking photos or simply enjoying the view : standing up, the view is incomparably better.

Choose a kayak if...

  • You fish or plan to fish : stability, lots of room for gear and the option to fit fishing accessories. Fishing kayaks today is a specialised, fully fledged fishing platform.
  • You paddle long distances : a kayak is less affected by wind and lets you cover long stretches faster and more efficiently.
  • You want a sense of adventure : multi day trips with gear and nights out in nature.
  • You need something reliable in any weather : a kayak is more stable in rain, wind and waves.
  • You paddle with a dog or lots of gear : the capacity and stability of fishing kayaks make this comfortable.

Or maybe both?

Many water sports fans end up owning both over time: a SUP for summer mornings and a kayak for more serious trips. If your budget only allows one, think about this: where and how will you paddle most often? A quiet summer spot by a lake: go for a SUP. Fishing, longer trips, windy Lithuanian rivers: a kayak.

Safety on the water

Even on a paddle board we recommend wearing a life jacket, especially when paddling far from shore or on moving water. Lightweight WALLYS buoyancy aids do not restrict movement and are made for paddling. Read more: life jacket comparison.

What to choose

The decision depends on where and with whom you will paddle.
