The kayaking season in Lithuania starts in April and runs until November. But before your first paddle, whether it is your first season or your tenth, it is worth preparing. A properly prepared kayak, checked gear and a planned route let you enjoy the water without unnecessary hassle.
How do you prepare a kayak after winter?
If your kayak spent the winter in a garage or shed, there are a few simple steps before the first paddle. Rinse the kayak with clean water and check for cracks, scratches or damage. HDPE plastic kayaks (Galaxy Kayaks, NuCanoe, Bonafide) are very tough, but after winter it is worth taking a closer look, especially at the hull bottom.
Check that all the hatch covers are watertight and that the buckles and fittings work. If the seat is adjustable, check that all the mechanisms move smoothly. No lubrication is needed, but if there are metal parts anywhere, you can apply a silicone spray to stop them rusting.
What gear do you need at the start of the season?
In April and early May the water in Lithuania is still cold, around +8 to 14 degrees. So at the start of the season you need more protection than in summer:
Clothing: neoprene pants or a wetsuit (3mm neoprene), a windproof jacket, neoprene boots. If you paddle in early spring, when the water is still very cold, a a drysuit is the safest choice.
Safety: life vest must always be worn. In spring it matters even more, as cold water quickly saps your strength even if you can swim. A whistle and a mobile phone in a waterproof bag are the minimum safety kit.
Accessories: a dry bag for your things, a paddle (check that the joints have not loosened) and a waterproof phone case.
Where should you paddle for the first time after winter?
For your first outing after a break, choose calm, familiar water. Lakes without strong wind are the best choice. In spring avoid rivers with strong currents, when the water is high after the thaw. The most popular places are described in the article Where to kayak in Lithuania.
Your first paddle after winter should be short, about an hour. Over the winter your body loses the habit of paddling, and your arms and shoulders tire faster. Better to do a few short paddles a week than to set off on a long route straight away.
What should you check before every paddle?
A short checklist before every trip: the weather forecast (especially wind speed and direction), the water temperature (which decides what clothing you need), the route (where you start, where you finish, how long it will take) and whether someone knows where you are.

Frequently asked questions
Safety on the water
Always wear a life jacket when kayaking. For recreational paddling, light and comfortable WALLYS buoyancy aids are a great choice: they do not restrict movement and are affordable. We offer sizes for children and adults based on body weight. More about safety gear: life jacket comparison.
When does the kayaking season start in Lithuania?
Most paddlers start the season in mid April and finish at the end of October or in November. With the right clothing (a drysuit) you can paddle from March to December, but that is for experienced paddlers.
Can you go kayaking in the rain?
Yes. Rain on its own does not spoil a paddle. The wind forecast matters more, as strong wind whips up waves and makes paddling harder. With wind up to 5 m/s, paddling will be comfortable even in the rain.
How should you store a kayak in summer between paddles?
Ideally in a garage or under a roof, where the kayak is protected from direct sunlight. UV breaks down plastic over time, so for long term storage outdoors it is better to cover it with a tarp. You will find more about storage in the article Kayak transport and storage.
